Once IconPackager is installed, this functionality is natively added to Windows Vista. It's totally seamless. Any icon that doesn't have a x image gets a smaller version that doesn't look as good as it could. One issue on Windows Vista is how icons are displayed. Most icons are 32x32 pixels in size.
Some programs have a higher resolution 48x48 version. But on Windows Vista, unless there's a x version, the lower resolution version is displayed in it native size which can look strange especially on your desktop. Users of Windows Vista will no doubt soon notice that as they install programs that add short-cuts to their desktops that many of those icons look smaller and strange compared to the default icons on the desktop.
IconPackager supports changing program icons as well. To do it once you have IconPackager installed right-click on the icon you want to change and choose properties. Program icons can be changed with IconPackager installed as well. The entire set of Windows icons can be changed in a single click by using an icon package. There are thousands out there.
Most do not yet support the x resolution of native Vista icons yet Stardock is working on a way to up-convert on the fly if there's a sufficiently high resolution version available. Jeez yet another perfectly fine function removed to have to resort to a registry or command line fix .
Sure I understand they wanted to simplify and redesign things but come on this was a useful option. It's not too hard to do in the registry but we really shouldn't have to. The excuse that most users won't even notice it doesn't wash. You know, it's funny. People complain left and right about stuff like the UAC, and the memory consumption, and not liking Aero glass, etc.
I actually like a large majority of stuff in Vista including all of these things. My biggest complaint in Vista is hands-down the file type association problems. They removed the filetype icon and context menu items from the filestypes section of folder options.
AND, if you try to change th icon and commands in the registry, it doesn't always work like it should. Sometimes Explorer decides to "ignore" the registry when you use the "Open with Anyways, to bring back the functionality that we're all familiar with give this program a go: Creative Element Powertools. Install this program, and you'll find a "sub-program" called "File Type Doctor". This will allow you to change the icons and context menu items like on Windows XP.
Also, it has neat little option to "lock" a filetype, disabling Vista and other programs from modifying your filetype preferences. Complaining about Aero is a bit dumb, turn if off if you dislike it. Memory consumption is higher but that's to be expected, it shouldn't be an issue with Gb of RAM, memory utilisation is much better. Creative Element Powertools isn't free though :. You should be able to take your own rights away from the relevant registry key so software cannot steal it back.
I did this under permissions on XP to prevent WMP11 from keep stealing my associations despite what I'd set it worked a treat. I just set it to read only I believe. You're still the owner so can always revert it back. It also annoys me why for some reason they've removed the ability to reduce the System Restore size, why?
You now have to achieve this with a built in command tool, which hasn't been removed. Changing the file type icon is possible using reg files.
Unfortunately, there's not an easier way that I know of. I'll use UltraISO as an example, which has an installer, but I made it into a portable application so I don't have to reinstall it.
However, i've come across a site which you can change most but not all of the Control Panel Icons. Click Here to visit the Vista x64 forum site. From there, users will have to run the Registry editor regedit. After running regedit.
Note that you'll need to type in the exact path of the icon file, including the name and the. However, some of the icons will require the user to take ownership of the registry key. Welcome Guest!
